Capitol Reef Family Reunion

Just after school got out we took off for our Family Reunion to Capitol Reef Park.  Rick had some trade at the Days Inn and two restaurants, La Cueva and The Broken Spur.  We were glad to have the rooms and food available to us.  Kaitlyn did not want to come so we brought Haivyn and Merik along with us.  We had two adjoining rooms and all of our beds were full with visiting grandkids.  It was GREAT!

Days Inn had a nice breakfast for us in the mornings.  Here are some pictures of our group enjoying breakfast together.

Brach and Kendra and Rick and I arrived on Tuesday.  Skylar and Sarah had a soccer game for Daisy so they did not arrive until Wednesday afternoon.

After a good breakfast we headed right over to Fruita and ended up spending quite a bit of time there.  The kids LOVE the river!
The weather was perfect for getting wet.

After Fruita we drove further to the East.  Our hotel clerk told us of a place to go find some ‘fossilized oysters’.  We went there and did some exploring.  It was very hot and dry with no shade so we didn't stay for too long.

On the way back we stopped to get a picture or two in the rocks!

Oh my goodness!  The kids LOVED the pool.
Of course,  it's always the belle of the ball!
The kids spent a lot of time in the pool the three days we were there.

When Skylar and Sarah arrived we were all ready for dinner.
We had our dinner at La Cueva and had some good Mexican food!
The young couples had their own table.

The big kids all sat together.

And grandpa and grandma sat with the younger ones:)

After dinner Rick and I (and Merik) took the ranger out for a ride on the Western Trail.  It is really pretty out there.
On our way back we rode through some Torrey neighborhoods off the Main St.  We found a group of sheep that were not fenced in and wondered about how they don't get lost.  Just then we saw a huge llama headed our way.  I quickly said to everyone, "roll up your windows, he's coming after us."  And boy did he get close.  He kept walking around our ATV and brought his head right up to the window staring us down.
It was just a little creepy.  Man, was I glad that we had the enclosed Ranger.  I'm not sure what the llama would have done if we had the open one.

After our ride we got settled in for the night.  Many of the grandkids came to our attached room to watch a show.  We all slept well except for Charlie who got scared from grandma's snoring.
Hmmm,  I hate that I snore!!

The next day after breakfast we started out at chimney Rock.
Everyone (except grandma) hiked up to the top of the trail and got to lookout over the area.
It was starting to get very warm by the end of the hike.

Interestingly enough, Dee Ann brought 3 of her friends for a Capitol Reef visit on the same exact days that we were there!  She brought Kathy Mouritsen, Ellen Yates, and Kim Gumucio.  I think they all had a nice trip!  We saw them a couple of different times while we were there.  They actually came up close behind us on the Chimney Rock hike.  It was fun to visit!

Chimney Rock

Handsome cousins!

And cute ones!

After Chimney Rock we made a short stop at the petroglyphs.
Rafe and Kendra...

Next we had another picnic at the Fruita Park, and the kids played in the river again.
Kids and water....the perfect balance!

After the picnic we were ready for the waterfall hike.  Brach and Kendra went back to the room with Chloe who was having a meltdown because she forgot her swimming suit.  They ended up having a nice nap while all the rest of us hiked to the waterfall.  It was nice and hot but the kids had SUCH a fun time sliding down the waterfall and playing in the water.

Castle Rock in the distance.

After the hike finished we went back to the room and got cleaned up for dinner.  We had dinner at The Broken Spur Restaurant and their food is always delicious.

We got back to the room and believe it or not the kids went swimming again!
They loved the pool!

The next morning, Brach and Rafe had to leave for a baseball tournament.  Kendra left a few hours later.  That left the Phelpses and Haivyn and Merik.  We took the ATV's out for a drive and the kids had fun playing on the red rocks!

After returning from the ATV ride we grabbed some lunch and then hiked the waterfall trail again.  We ended the reunion, and after packing up the ATV's, we got on the road for the four hour journey back home.

It was a super fun reunion put on by Skylar and Sarah!
