Was we were flying in I was really surprised to see how dry the area was. I said to Rick, "My goodness it feels like we are coming in to Death Valley." He agreed when he looked out the window.
After grabbing our bags we got a taxi to get to our hotel, about a thirty minute drive.
We were pleasantly surprised at how quaint the streets of Arequipa were. They were really clean and it looked like a place we could actually stay in for a couple of days and explore. Not this time, though. We were only there for one night.
We got into our hotel, the Katari, a boutique type hotel. It was located right in the Plaza De Las Armas square, a really pretty area. Our room was really cute.
We got some suggestions for a place to eat and went and grabbed a bite. The restaurant was tucked back in a cute courtyard with a few shops in it. Food was good:)
After dinner we went back to the room to get dressed for our temple experience.
It was another r thirty minute drive to get to the temple but we arrived at just the right time. The sun was just going down which gave us a chance to take some really pretty pictures of the temple.
We really enjoyed our experience there.
The Peruvian sisters were a great help to me while I was there.
Here is a view of the government building in the Plaza De Las Armas
That night we got to have a couples massage up on the fourth floor.
I think it was called an Aztec massage. Loved it!
After the massage we went to the top floor where the restaurant was located.
The moon was coming up behind the Misti Mountain (a cool volcano rising out of the ground) and made for a beautiful sight.
We rested well that night.
Here is the square outside our hotel.
That day before flying out we explored a little bit of Arequipa.
We tried on and bought hats, saw our first baby alpaca and visited a monastery.
Santa Catalina is a walled complex built in the 16th century.
At it's peak it housed around 500 people, with about 150 nuns.
It had some beautiful architecture and it was interesting to learn about the life of some of the nuns that lived here.
After the monastery we ate at a nice restaurant and then headed out to the airport.
This was the las view of Misti Mountain. It towered above the city.
Oh! One more picture...
Our flight out of Arequipa had the most amazing sunset!
So really did ride off into the sunset!😉
