Toast Concert with the Sisters

A few weeks ago I sent a text out to all of the Phelps Sisters inviting them to a concert.

When I was young I loved the group Bread.  The group broke up in the mid 70's.  Nowadays there is a cover band that plays their music and is on tour right now.  The name of the band is Toast!
 Isn't that so funny!

I got a yes, back from DeeAnn and she let me know that Kathy wanted to join us.
Darla would've come but she was goin to be out of town that night.
No one else responded...their loss...haha!

So the concert was last night.
We started the evening with a dinner at PF Changs.  We got a bunch of food and enjoyed talking.  Well, actually I did most of the talking telling the girls about my trip.
But I had fun telling them!  I hope they enjoyed listening!

We walked the few blocks from the restaurant and entered the Capitol Theatre.
We were up in the balcony and had a decent view.
The lady in back of us enjoyed photo bombing our picture. HaHa!

I got a lot of video of the band singing my favorite songs.
Some of them were If, Make It With You, Baby, I'mma Want You, Aubrey, and two of my favorites...Lost Without Your Love and Goodbye Girl.  David gates was a great singer songwriter!

They really did a good job singing for us and the nostalgia was real!

It was a great night with the sisterhood!

Valentine's 2025

Rick and I had been so excited to get to the Capitol Grill for our Valentine's date.  Unfortunately, I got sick and so we had to postpone.  Rick ended up getting some takeout from The Green Burrito (which actually tasted pretty wonderful).  We will be going to Capitol Grill next week at Rick's request:)

We stayed up watching Rick Steves travel show and then Rick went to bed while I stayed up watching The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.  I love that show and it was just the little bit of romance I needed for the night...being sick and all:)

But I had invited all the kids to come for a Sunday Valentine's Brunch.  We had a spiral cut ham, potatoes, eggs, fruit and sweet rolls.  It was good to get together with everyone after being gone for three whole weeks.

Here is the simple table for the adults....we were missing one because Kaitlyn decided not to come.

Everyone got a box of chocolates from Grandpa (at grandma's reminding HAHA)

Just after brunch we sent the kids to do a Valentine card craft while the adults had a Gospel discussion based on President Nelson's talk Think Celestial.  It was nice.

After that everyone met us upstairs for games.
Here are pictures of everyone getting ready to play the Valentine Trivia game.

After the Trivia game we played the name game.
It seems to be the kids' favorite right now.

This was the highlight of the night...
Henry made this sweet card for us...

What a treasure!
We love our family!

Seoul, Korea

At midnight on February 11th we took off on Korean Airlines heading for home.
We had a long layover in Seoul and so took advantage of that tie to see some sights.

First, and most important was the opportunity to go to the Seoul Korea Temple.
We packed our backpacks with clothes to be able to change into for the temple.
We were able to catch a taxi outside the Icheon airport and we drove into Seoul to get to the weather in Southeast Asia.  The weather in Korea is very different than Southeast Asia.  It was down into the 30's and we did not have winter clothing.  Luckily we had our sweatshirts from the plane ride (because I always get cold on long plane rides) and that really helped.  The temple was about 50 minutes from the airport and our driver did not speak much English so we just rode along looking at the sights.

We found the temple tucked back in an area where it was hidden.  It was only when we got really close that we could see the angel Moroni on top and knew we had arrived.  We were a little early so we took some pictures on the outside.

It was a nice session.  We had headsets to help us through.
The Seoul, Korea Tempe is our 92nd temple.
We are on track to get to our 100th temple by the end of the year.

After the session we walked down the street to find some food.  I had previously talked with Allie Beckett who had served her mission there of what to eat and do while we were there.  We just had the afternoon so we were hoping to find a Korean BBQ place.  The place we were directed to by someone at the temple ended up being like a lunchroom so we passed on that.
We just walked around until we found a fried chicken place.  Allie had mentioned the Koreans love their fried chicken.  Well, we did find a place and the food, We both felt it was just so so.

Allie mentioned that there are a lot of bakeries around so I had spotted a bakery on our way to lunch so after lunch we headed back that way.  We enjoyed our dessert!
Looking at this picture makes me want to have a bite.

After dessert we knew we wanted to go see the Changgeyonggong Palace.
On the way we passed the Geyonbokgung Palace as we were driving by.

Our über driver waited for us as we visited the palace.
It was built in the year 1418 and is designated as a world UNESCO heritage sight.
I read that if you dress up in the traditional hanbok clothing you can get in free.
We did not do this but did see people who did.
Kinda fun!

This is the entrance to the palace.

This is the inside court area

This is the King's throne.

I like the cool doors.

It was really interesting to see this sight.  It is unlike anything we have seen before.

After our visit to the palace we got back with our UBER and made the trek back to the airport.  We were tired from our overnight flight and busy day so we slept most of the time.  We both woke ourselves up a couple of times snoring and had a good laugh afterward thinking we gave our UBER driver something to smile about. Haha!

Our flight left that evening and we flew 11 hours into LA.  When we got there it was the same morning as it had been in Seoul.  With the international date line we flew "back in time" to get back on the same day we left.  We were very happy to arrive in SLC where Gary picked us up and took us HOME!

We had been on:

18 ride shares, 13 flights, 12 boat rides, 9 E-Trikes, 4 Temples, 4 Marriotts, 3 countries, 2 villas,

and 1 PHENOMENAL TRIP!  It was a trip for the books!  We were most impressed with the people.  We met SO MANY good people!  They were so kind and took very good care of us!  It is now just a memory but we will always remember with great fondness our time in this area of the world!

KUALA LUMPUR

After leaving the rainforest lodge we made our way back to Sandakan for lunch at the Sabah Hotel, where we ate on the first day of our tour.  It was very good:)

Here are a few pictures of the Sandakan downtown area.  We stopped in a couple of shops and ended up buying a couple of cookies for the road:) The living conditions look a little/lot rougher than we are used to.

I saw a sign in the window of a place for rent for 134 Ringgit which is about 30 American Dollars for a month.  I wondered if it had indoor plumbing....

Next we got to take a tour of the Rainforest Discovery Center  (of which I have no pictures of)
We enjoyed looking at flora and birds in the area.

We got to the airport around 5:00 for a 7:00 flight Kuala Lumpur.  The flight ended up being and hour and a half late which put us in KL at 11PM.  It had been a long day and we were tired.  We then caught the KLIA train to KL Sentral, about a thirty minute ride.  When we got off of the train there was a porter waiting for us with a luggage rack to take our belongings to the hotel.  WHAT AMAZING SERVICE!

If he had not come I'm afraid wen would have been very lost!  As it was we were able to follow him up a couple of elevators and out onto the street level where we crossed the street RIGHT INTO THE HOTEL!
We were happy to get there!  We stayed at the Le Meridien Hotel which is a Marriott affiliate.
We were so happy that they were able to upgrade us into ANOTHER SUITE!  This one was probably the nicest of them all and we were going to be there for THREE DAYS!  We got right to sleep and woke up to a beautiful day!  This was the view outside our bedroom window and guess what?  We spent a good amount of time that day just unwinding at the pool.

But let me just say that before our time at the pool we stopped at the breakfast on the 5th floor.  The desk attendant when we checked in said we could have breakfast at the executive lounge or on the 5th floor.
He quietly said, "but the 5th floor breakfast is better."
HOLY COW!!
Better??  It was the most lavish and expansive breakfast buffet we had ever been to!
There was a noodle station, an omelet station, a waffle/pancake station, a whole bar of Chinese New Year foods, a whole bar of Malaysian foods, a whole bar of American foods, and a whole bar of European pastries and delights.  There was also a station with a man making fresh juice!
I mean seriously....this buffet was EVERYTHING!

After spending time at the pool we saw this cute couple in the lobby.
It was their wedding day and they were hosting a HUGE reception on the 5th floor.
Don't they look so happy?  And Beautiful in their Malaysian traditional clothing?

That afternoon we did something SUPER fun!
We rented bikes with a group of fifteen others and toured the city!

It was just a great time!
We stopped at important historical and interesting places throughout the four hour tour.
We stopped at a fruit market and each of us got to try different fruits that we had never seen before.
We passed through Chinatown and got tot see a Chinese New Year parade celebration.
We also stopped and had a fabulous dinner with samosas, noodles, tandoori chicken, fried rice and some amazing cheese roti.  For dessert they brought out something called roti tissue.  It was a thin piece of dough (tissue paper thin, thus the name) fried and then sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon.
It tasted like a churro.😀

Towards the end of our tour we stopped at this Hindu Temple and took off our shoes to be able to walk through.  These temples are very interesting with many statues of their gods.

We found vendors outside the temple preparing these flowers for the festival that was starting the next day.

This carriage was being decked out for the festival.
For the festival people meet at the temple and follow the carriage in a procession to the Batu Caves.  It is about a five hour walk for them.

We passed the Mederka Tower (the world's seventh tallest building)and got to see it all lit up!

We also passed the Petronas Twin Towers.
(they are the world's tallest twin towers)
What a sight!  It was very cool!

The next morning we got a Grab to take us to church.
It was an incredibly spiritual sacrament meeting with the missionaries giving talks.

That afternoon we went over to the Mederka Tower and got to rid the elevator up to the top!
It was cool to see the city from all directions up that high.
An interesting note is the tower behind us in this picture is the SECOND tallest building in the world.
It is almost completely finished so it was not open for tours.  Darn it!  That would've been cool!

After that we went back to the hotel for an early dinner and a rest.
Around 5 PM we left the hotel to go to the Batu Caves.
In studying this to do in KL this was definitely one that we wanted to do.
It took about twenty minutes to get there in a Grab and is on the edge of the city.
It is a Hindu place of worship.  Maybe a temple even?
This is the place where the people were going to be walking in a procession to that I mentioned earlier.
This gold statue is of Moragon, one of the Hindu gods.  We did not realize in planning to come this day that it would be a special festival day for the Hindus. Because of the festival the place was full of people!  There were many vendors selling foods and goods.  Many people were wearing bright yellow clothing and carrying offerings up the stairs into the cave.  Many women were carrying small pots filled with milk on their heads as an offering.  One man was carrying what looked like a banana palms up the stairs.  There are 272 steps to climb.  NOT a small amount.  Some were having a difficult time getting up to the top.  I am happy to say that I made it to the top!  I didn't know if I could make it!  Also, there were lots of macaque monkeys all around.

I think this is such a cool picture with that giant statue and the beautiful colored stairs.
It is sad to think that people actually worship the statues and pay money to give offerings to them but that is what they know and they do their best to live like they've been taught.

Hopefully someday these good people can come to know Jesus Christ!

The next morning after another scrumptious buffet breakfast we got to go up into the Petronas Towers.
We first went to the bridgeway that connects the two buildings than we wet!nt up to the top to again, overlook the city.  It was grea

That afternoon we had a very late checkout (7PM) because our flight didn't leave until midnight so we enjoyed the pool for a couple of hours before having dinner and then leaving for the airport.  The porter was kind enough to take our luggage and see us to back to the train which would take us to there airport.  I mean the service of the workers on this whole trip to South East Asia was just phenomenal.  EVERYONE in service was so kind and helpful!  It made our trip that much better!

Our next stop...Seoul Korea!!
