Grandkids' Halloween Party

The first Friday in October Rick and I hosted a Halloween Party for our grandchildren.  There are five of them that are old enough to participate this year.  We had Rafe, Haivyn, Henry, Scout, and at two years old (and potty trained….which is a must) Charlie joined us for the first time.

We started the night out making homemade pizzas.  While this was a good idea and it ultimately turned out ok, the kids needed a lot of help in making their individual pizzas.  We thought it would be fun for them to roll out their dough and fill it in with sauce and toppings.  They were sure cute and needed help rolling the dough and spreading the sauce.  The cheese and toppings they pretty much did on their own.  Thank goodness Rick was there with me helping with pizza duty.  (As well as everything else that went on throughout the night) Fun but super messy!

While the pizzas were baking we made two fun appetizers. One was a banana with chocolate chip eyes and mouth to make a ghost.  The other was a mandarin orange “pumpkin” with a celery stump.  Even though the kids only ate a little piece of each they sure turned out cute and were fun to make.  Unfortunately, the oranges kept falling apart when the stump was put in. That was ok though.  The kids were just eating them anywayJ

The pizzas got finished baking and they were pretty yummy.  I was hungry and ate all of mine plus helped Haivyn finish off hers!

I made these "spooky slushies" for the kids and they were sooo yummy!!

After eating we had our first game ….. “Pin the Bowtie on the Skeleton”.  This was so cute and didn’t take very long.  I had purchased this game from Walmart and just hung it up on the door and each of the kids chose a colored bowtie and it went from there. Charlie started out and didn’t get his eyes covered.  Everyone else had to wear the special skeleton glasses for their turn.  They all cheered each other on and it was super cute.  I think Henry was the winner!

After the skeleton game, we made spider cookies.  Earlier in the day I made chocolate cake cookies.  They were nice and flat so we put a little frosting in between and the children gave the “spider” licorice legs and edible googly eyes.  Fun times!

After cookie time I played Halloween Bingo with the kids while Rick cleaned up from dinner and dessert. I printed a cute Halloween Bingo game up from the internet and the kids used M&M’s for the markers.  Charlie was out in left field and didn’t play (except for eating all of his candy) but the other kids did a good job finding their monster on the bingo cards.  Yes, they all won and ate all of their candy, too!

Next was a fun game of Pumpkin Twister.  This was another game printed up from the internet but it did take a lot of effort cutting out all of the pumpkins and then taping them to some poster paper.  I wouldn’t have had it any other way though.  I had fun doing it:)  It was cute and even though the kids don’t know their left from right we had a fun time getting tangled up on the pumpkin mat!  They all got a chance to be a “spinner person”, too.

The last game was our treasure hunt.  These riddles were also found from the internet and the kids had fun running up and down the stairs finding the clues from “grandpa’s stinky shoes” to “where skeletons find their snacks”.  The end of the hunt was underneath the dining room table where their fun prizes were found. Each child got a bag filled with fun prizes.  They each got a coloring book with markers and special Halloween sippie cups as well as little dollar store trinkets.  They were so happy!  I loved hearing their excited squeals as they pulled out each prize showing them to their cousins.  So fun!!

Next was bath time. Grandpa took care of the boys in the master bath while I quickly got the girls bathed in the guest bath.  Each of the kids got new jammies and were so cute in them.

After bath time was movie time.  Rick watched Room on a Broom with them while I cleaned up downstairs as much as possible. (the house was pretty much trashed….which is to be expected with five monsters on the loose!)  After the first short movie then we put on Chicken Run for the rest of the evening.  Scout fell asleep first then one by one they all faded off except for Rafe and Haivyn.

Rafe wanted to sleep in our bed and Haivyn was fine after she was tucked in on the floor next to the other cousins.  It was a fairly uneventful night until 2AM when Henry woke up crying wanting his mom. Rick pulled a sleeping Rafe out of our bed and put Henry in with us.  Then we heard a “Gampa?”.  It was Charlie starting to whimper.  Henry said, “Grandpa, he just wants to lay with you, too.”  So in came Charlie and that’s how it was the rest of the night. Henry was smack dab next to me the whole night long.  Not a restful sleep but all in the name of memory making!!

It was a crazy and chaotic night but we sure had a good time with these kiddos!
Sure do love them!!
