Rafe Douglas Boman was born Friday October 19, 2012. He weighed 7 lbs and 14 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long. Kendra had been at my home that evening helping me to get ready for our Halloween Party and at 5:00 she walked out of the bathroom and said, "I think my water just broke." We talked about what was happening and decided that it was true that was what was really happening. She got this scared look on her face and said, "I don't know if I'm ready for this." I assured her that she was and that she had been prepaing for this for months and then she said, "I better go home." After getting home to be with Brach and calling the mid-wife she was informed that labor should start within 12 hours. She hadn't felt any labor pains up to this point except for some back pain that she had a few days before so I was thinking that it might take a while for things to get going.
In the meantime we went on with our party.
After having dinner I looked at my phone and saw that the volume was turned down and that I had missed two calls from Kendra. (My volume was turned down....For crying out loud how did that happen?) I called back and Brach answered and said that Kendra was in a lot of pain and that contractions were coming evey 4-5 minutes. They were already at Better Births and things were progressing pretty fast. OK, now it's time for me to get worried. How did this all happen so fast? It was 8:30 and she was already in stage three transition (I had to google that just to see what that really meant. I never went through traditional labor and delivery so I was a little unclear.) Meanwhile, back at the party DeeAnn suggested that we kneel down and have a prayer that all would be well with Kendra and baby. I was thankful for that. I couldn't get too much into the games we were playing because of my worries for Kendra but finally at 10:45 as I was dozing on the couch my phone rang and it was Kendra Dee telling us that our grandson was here! She said, "Do you want to know his name?" We said yes and then she said, "Rafe Douglas Boman." We laughed and I thought to myself....What??? What happened to the other names that you were leaning toward? You know, Boston or Clancy? They totally surprised us! I said to Rick, "We've got to leave to go see her right now!" So we headed up to Better Births and met our beautiful new grandson. He really is a doll! He was born with a HUGE conehead....the likes of nothing I'd ever seen before..... but he was just perfect. Kendra did SUCH a great job in delivering him with no meds (not even her essential oils that she had been preparing for....there just wasn't time) She said she didn't cry or scream even though it hurt A LOT! In fact when I saw her that night she was just chipper and happy and didn't use words like hurt or pain she just said, "Mom, that was really intense!"
Oh, how I love my Kendra girl! so on to the pictures.....
I love this full body shot!
The huge conehead:) It was looking very normal in just a few short hours:)
The Boman Family
Doesn't Kenni look great after just delivering an almost 8 lb baby!
Brach is an excellent daddy! He is a very hands on dad.
Baby Rafe and Grandma
Uncle Skylar and 2 day old Rafe
Grandpa and Rafe. It is cute to me to see how much Rick loves this little baby.
He's teared up a few times in just talking about him.
He loves to hold him and laugh at all of Rafe's funny faces and baby noises.
Oh, he is so sweet! We love you little Rafe! This morning when Brach left for school and while Kendra was sleeping I got to spend 3 hours of uninterupted time with him. He was alert and awake and gazed right up into my eyes as I spoke tender and loving words to him. I have a feeling this is going to be the beginning of an incredible journey:)
